SBF Press Briefing

SBF launching Sean Rickard's agriculture trade report

Save British Farming’s press briefing features in this week’s Farmer’s Weekly. Former NFU chief economist Dr. Sean Rickard lays bare the bleak outlook for farmers if the government fails to reach an agreement with the EU. Rutland farmer Andrew Brown expects his farm, which his family have owned for over 300 years, will likely fold in the event of a no-deal Brexit.

If you’d like to see the Zoom call it was based on, you can find it below.

We should remind rural Conservative MPs of Michael Gove’s forecast… We need their support when the Agriculture Bill returns to the Commons next month.

SBF launches new report

SBF launches a report into the health implications of lowering food standards

Save British Farming launches a new report today. NHS Dietitian Gabrielle Morse examines the implications of a US-UK trade deal to the nation’s health, given their insistence we must allow their lower quality food as part of the deal. It seems that ‘chlorinated chicken’ and ‘hormone-filled beef’ are just the tip of an unhealthy iceberg.

You can read download the report at the link.

Andrew Brown in the Mail on Sunday

The new Agriculture Bill could end 300 years of Browns farming their land

The Brown family has tilled the soil in the Welland Valley for more than 300 years, but Walter’s grandson Andrew fears the new Agriculture Bill will mean he is the last.

Mr Brown, 56, says the Bill fails to protect the UK’s world-leading food and welfare standards

And that could be the ‘final nail in the coffin’ for 40,000 family farms which would be replaced by massive US-style feedlots, where tens of thousands of cattle are crammed into pens with poor environmental standards.

We featured Andrew’s video on our social media last week, which attracted the attention of the Mail on Sunday.  Read more about his story here.

SBF letter to NFU & response

Save British Farming founder, Liz Webster, has been corresponding with Minette Batters, President of the National Farmers Union about our campaign.  In late June, we were told the NFU did not support our tractor protest in Westminster.  On this page are follow-up emails showing our attempt to reach out, and the NFU’s continuing failure to support us (click the letter to enlarge).

After almost two weeks, the NFU finally responded to Liz, failing to address most of the points she made.  They reiterated their belief that our active campaigning is wrong, and that their petition is the most effective way to pressure government (click letter to enlarge).

Farmers around the country are ordering our banners

We’re pleased at the take-up of our banners following the launch of our ‘board of broken promises’ campaign.  We’re asking farmers to send photos in.  So far we have them in Somerset, Wiltshire and Kent.

No sunlit uplands for farmers

No sunlit uplands for farmers

Rutland farmer Andrew Brown talks about his farm and what generations of his family have ensured for the community.  The Browns have worked the land for over 300 years, but the new Agriculture Bill may ensure he will be the last.

Farmers make our food. They look after our countryside.  The government should be looking after them.
